Yesterday, I tackled the network cabling and configuration of the small switch for Polygon, our self-hosted home server platform. I started by organizing the cables in the server closet to ensure a clear, unobstructed path for the data. The network cabling was a bit messy, with several unused and tangled wires, so I took the time to label each cable and categorize them by their purpose—Internet connection, internal server network, and storage devices. This helped in reducing confusion and making future maintenance easier.
Next, I configured the small Ethernet switch to connect all the devices properly. I used a 4-port managed switch, which allows for better control and monitoring of the network traffic. I connected the switch to the router and the servers, ensuring that each port was assigned to the correct device. I tested the connections by pinging the IP addresses of the servers to verify that everything was functioning correctly. The setup now provides a stable and efficient network for our family and friends, with faster data transfer and better reliability compared to the previous setup.
